The Magic of Water

Water Sculptures in steel, copper and other medium by David Harvey

Thousands of years ago, people carved and adorned the places where natural springs bubbled from the earth.  These springs were even thought to have spirits and were sacred.  These sources of fresh water were revered as a source of life and inspiration.

The Romans took this to equisite heights celebrating their accomplishment of 11 aqueducts bringing fresh water into the city of Rome. Each unique fountain celebrated the water as it came in to the city. The fountains also functionally served to provide access to the water. Each water source was distinctive, tasted different and the spirit of it was believed to be unique.

Many cultures and civilizations throughout history have found ways to honor water in their daily lives.

Today we turn a knob or valve and water comes out. Often we lose the magic and the value of that experience. Through my sculptures I want to celebrate water in our lives and reintroduce the sense of magic and celebration and value of water. Water is an essential part our world and our existence. It is a tremendous resource that is enriching and life giving. It can be gentle and yet have immense power.

Water is part of us.
